West Garden Fence

Back at the farm and it was a beautiful Iowa day! I’m on my own on this trip and missing Becky.

The big project for this trip was to take out the fence that is on the west side of the yard. It’s been there at least 80 years and I’ve spent a lot of time mowing around it over the years but it was starting to show its age. It was a standard farm fence – 3 barb wires with woven wire and hedge posts from the back pasture.

Took off the barb wires and pulled the woven wire away from the posts. Discovered most of the woven wire was underground so I got the newly repaired tractor out of the corn crib for the first time this year. It was a nice ride over to the fence.

Used a log chain to hook on to the woven wire and pulled it out pretty easily. There were five posts that were still pretty solid in the ground including a corner post my dad probably put in about 40 years ago.

I backed the tractor up to the post, used the log chain and did a single wrap around the post and around the 3 point hitch. I lifted it straight up out of the ground about two feet. I discovered it was still not all the way up. Put the hitch down and connected to the post again. Got another two feet of post out of the ground and it was loose! I helped my dad build and fix fence. He always did it right. Did the same process on the other four hedge posts. It was amazing to see the part of the hedge posts that were in the ground were still as good as the day they were installed.

Cleaned up my mess, did some mowing and then used the tractor to compress the dirt in the fence line. That was enough for today!
