Black Walnut Tree Trimming & Cleanup

Back on the farm – Day 1 for Becky, Day 1/2 for Randy. Beck got up at the butt-crack of dawn and was down at the farm by 7:45. I stayed at the townhouse waiting on the air conditioning guy to come and do yearly maintenance. We had a 9 – noon window and he showed up around 11. Tomo and I got down to the farm just in time to bring and have lunch with Mom.

We lost a major limb on the black walnut tree out by where the old garage used to be. Rod came out a week ago and got the limb down and piled up on the old feeding floor. Beck loaded the truck with the first load and was headed out to the burn pile when she discovered she had company. Bill’s cattle were up at the water tank because the creek has dried up. She called and asked advice on how to get the gate open and truck in and gate closed without letting any of the cows and calves out. I think they liked her because although she was able to get in and get the gate shut, they were interested in “hanging out” with her!

Beck got about 2/3 of the branches off and suddenly realized she was surrounded. The next phone call was asking if Bill had a bull out with the cows. We determined the bull was up as well so Beck decided to ditch the truck and get on the other side of the fence! Feeling safe, she took a bunch of really cool pictures.

Since she “lost” the truck, she called again and was looking for other things to do. She put a coat of paint on the cave door, trimmed a bit more off the black walnut tree, and cleaned up the sidewalks around the house. Not bad for 90+ degree weather!

After lunch, we went out and “rescued” the truck. The cattle didn’t like me very much and took off to the pasture. We finished unloading the first load of branches, went and got and unloaded the second load and then saved some of the larger diameter branches. We finished off the day by getting a small ladder in the back of the pickup and did some additional trimming on the black walnut tree. It was really hot by then so we called it a day. More adventures tomorrow – we’re starting early and finishing early!
